Legendary American Pete Sampras was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame alongside Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Sven Davidson of Sweden and American photographer Russ Adams in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Sampras, who is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, was presented at the induction ceremony by his ex-coach and former ATP pro Paul Annacone.

Sampras captured a record 14 Grand Slam titles, including seven Wimbledon crowns (1993-95, 1997-2000), five US Open trophies (1990, 1993, 1995-96, 2002) and two Australian Opens in 1994 and 1997. At Grand Slams he had a 203-38 record.

He held the ATP World No. 1 ranking for a record 286 weeks, including a streak of 102 weeks between April 15, 1996 and March 30, 1998. He was in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings for 12 straight years.

The right-hander was honored as the ATP Player of the Year from 1993 to 1998, when he finished as year-end World No. 1 six years in a row.

He won the ATP World Championships five times (1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999) - a record he shares with Ivan Lendl.

Sampras compiled a 762-222 record – seventh on the all-time list - over a 15-season professional career. He won 64 singles crown from 88 finals overall and also captured two doubles titles.

His first ATP singles title came at Philadelphia (d. Gomez) in February 1990 and as No. 17 seed in the final match of his career he beat long-term rival Andre Agassi for the 2002 US Open.

Sampras remains the all-time leader in total career prize money, earning $43,280489 million.
When representing the United States of America in Davis Cup competition, Sampras was a team member for eight years winning the Cup in 1992 and 1995. His Davis Cup record stands at 19-9 (15-8 in singles, 4-1 in doubles)

Sampras is the 114th American to join the
International Tennis Hall of Fame, which was established in 1954.

Sanchez-Vicario was a former World No. 1 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, who captured three Roland Garros titles and became the first Spanish women to win the US Open. Davidson became the first Swede to win a Grand Slam title, at Roland Garros in 1957, while photographer Adams has enjoyed a hugely successful 50-year career covering the sport.

小山在網壇的成就,列居第一位是無庸置疑的
但是我不得不承認,繼楊宗緯之後,同樣在他身上我看到了另一例活生生的『人類進化史』
